GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF TASK(S) AND OBJECTIVES TO BE ACHIEVED

The “Global Forest Survey” project aims to establish a global network of geo-referenced permanent sample plots to produce a detailed, forest biome/type level, information on forest carbon, forest health and other forest characteristics.

The “Space Data Management System” project helps countries to access remote sensing data and generate forest maps and related information products in a cloud computing environment using a user-friendly web-based interface.

Under the overall guidance of the Forest Monitoring and Assessment Team Leader and the direct supervision of the responsible project Lead Technical Officers, the consultant will contribute to the following tasks.

  •   Development of GUIs and backend code to produce multi-platform and user-friendly online and/or standalone land monitoring tools
  •   Support in the development of Open Foris open-source software tools and country-specific methodologies and procedures for the

    assessment of land use, land use change and forestry in the REDD+ context

  •   Technical support to in-country counterparts using the tools developed within the project
  •   Any other tasks as requested

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  •   Advanced university degree in Computer Engineering or similar
  •   3-5 years of relevant experience in software development
  •   Work experience in development of Python/Java applications
  •   Fluency in English and working knowledge of French, Spanish, Arabic or Russian

    SELECTION CRITERIA

    Candidates will be assessed against the following:

  •   Advanced knowledge of Python, Java, SQL, HTML and JavaScript
  •   Past experience in developing Python/Java applications (desktop and online)
  •   Knowledge of Google Earth Engine API
  •   Experience with GDAL and R statistical software
  •   Experience in software development in the forestry (or related field) context is an asset
  •   Knowledge of Mondrian and business intelligence applications is an asset
